Fishy Business is a relaxing aquarium tycoon game for your browser. Your great-aunt has left you a dusty little fish shop and three hungry guppies, and it is up to you to turn it into the greatest aquarium on the coast. Feed your fish, keep the water clean, raise fry into adults and sell them, or keep your best fish on show so visitors pay to see them.

The heart of the game is breeding. Two happy adults of the same species lay eggs, and every egg has a chance to hatch as a rare colour mutation: Albino, Neon, Golden, Shadow or the dazzling Rainbow, worth up to fifteen times a normal fish. Mutant parents often pass their colour on, so a careful breeding plan can fill a tank with treasures. There are 22 species across four habitats, from Freshwater guppies and Neon Tetras to Coral Reef clownfish, Deep Sea anglerfish and, at the very top, the legendary creatures of the Mystic Lagoon.

As your reputation grows you unlock more of the business. Customers place orders for specific fish and pay about twice the market price. From level 2 you can take the boat out on fishing trips: a short reeling minigame where you keep the fish inside a moving green bar, and a successful catch can be a species you cannot buy yet. You can hire a janitor, a marketer, a salesperson, a boat captain, a vet and a geneticist, who keep working in every tank even while you are away. Up to six tanks can each be upgraded with a bigger size, a filter, a heater and an auto-feeder, plus decorations that draw bigger crowds.

Every new entry in the Fishdex permanently adds 1% to all your income, and completing all six colours of a species earns a Pearl. From level 15 you can franchise your aquarium for Pearls and buy permanent perks before starting again. Random events keep things lively: school trips, a streaming influencer, plankton blooms, market frenzies and a mysterious trader. Fishy Business is free, works on phones and computers, saves automatically, and keeps earning for up to eight hours while you are offline.

How to play

1. Tap the water to drop food. Leftover food rots and dirties the water.
2. Drag on the glass to scrub algae, or press Clean.
3. Tap a fish to see its growth, health and mood, and to sell, keep, rename or move it.
4. Two happy adults of the same species lay eggs, and each egg can mutate into a rare colour worth up to ×15.
5. Adults draw visitors, who pay a steady income. Tap golden bubbles for a cash bonus.
6. From level 2, go on fishing trips: hold (or press Space) to keep the fish inside the green bar.

Controls

Tips and strategy

• Follow the goal card in the top-left corner. Its 31 goals double as the tutorial and pay generous rewards.
• Don't overfeed. Leftover pellets rot and dirty the water, which makes fish unhappy and stops breeding.
• Keep one breeding pair of every species you unlock. New colour mutations only appear from eggs.
• Fill customer orders whenever you can: they pay about twice the market price and boost your reputation.
• Watch the hot species in the top bar. It sells for double for a short time, so sell your spare adults of that kind then.
